Matariki: A Time of Reflection, Renewal and Celebration

As the crisp winter mornings greet the East Coast of Aotearoa, a cluster of twinkling stars rises in the pre-dawn sky - Matariki. At Ahikaa Motel in Gisborne, we are proud to share in the traditions and stories of this special time of year, and we invite our manuhiri (guest) to experience the magic of Matariki with us.

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for the Pleiades star cluster, which becomes visible in the early morning sky during mid-winter. It's appearance marks the beginning of the Maori New Year - a time for remembering those who have passed, giving thanks for the harvest, and for looking ahead with hope and intentions for the coming year.

For Maori, Matariki is more than just a constellation - it is a time of connection to the land, the sea, the people and the universe. Each star within the cluster has its own significance, linked to various elements of the environment, from freshwater and oceans to crops and well-being.
